In a monumental event at the Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence in Abuja, the new heads of the Ministry, Minister of Defence Alhaji Mohammed Badaru and Minister of State for Defence Dr. Bello Matawalle met with the Service Chiefs for a reception and signing of Handing and Taking Over Notes.

The ceremony commenced with a military-style mounting and inspection of the Quarter Guard by the new ministers. This was followed by a procession to the Minister’s Conference Hall, attended by the Minister of Defence, Minister of State for Defence, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, and the Service Chiefs, including the Chief of Defence Intelligence.

In his inaugural address to the Ministry and Service Chiefs, Minister Alhaji Badaru emphasized the need for the Service Chiefs to provide a clear timeline, targets, and requirements for addressing the security challenges in the country. He stated that this information would be passed to the President, who has a hands-on approach and a strong commitment to addressing security issues.

Minister Badaru expressed optimism that within a year, significant improvements would be seen in the country’s security architecture. He emphasized the importance of success, noting that without security, there can be no investment, economic growth, or food security. Minister Badaru stressed the President’s unwavering support and commitment to achieving these goals.

“I will ensure complete cooperation among all the security agencies in the country,” Minister Badaru added. He also announced plans to hold monthly meetings with the security agencies and their ministers to strengthen collaboration in addressing security challenges.

In his remarks, Minister of State for Defence Dr. Bello Matawalle acknowledged the dedication of the Armed Forces in the face of persisting security challenges. He emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach that includes deploying cutting-edge technology, addressing the root causes of insecurity through job creation, collaborating with relevant agencies, and engaging civil society.

“The Ministry will spare no efforts in ensuring the country is safe,” Minister Matawalle declared.

Prior to handing over the Ministry’s notes to Minister Badaru, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Dr. Ibrahim Kana, commended President’s careful selection of the Ministers, recognizing the critical importance of security, especially in the North East and North West regions. He expressed confidence in Minister Badaru and Minister Matawalle’s ability to provide strong leadership to the Ministry.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, highlighted the Ministry and Defence Chiefs’ responsibility to restore peace, security, and tranquility in Nigeria. General Musa assured the Ministers of the loyalty and dedication of the agencies, emphasizing their commitment to making Nigeria a tranquil and secure nation.

The event concluded with the official signing of the Handing and Taking Over Notes and group photographs.
