In a bid to address the longstanding problem of flooding on the Abuja-Lokoja highway, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced plans to construct a flyover as a permanent solution. Umahi made this declaration during his inaugural tour to inspect ongoing construction works on the Abuja-Lokoja road.

The significance of the Abuja-Lokoja road cannot be overstated, as it serves as a crucial link connecting the southwest, south-south, and southeast regions to the Federal Capital Territory and the northern parts of the country. Recognizing its critical role in the socio-economic life of the nation, the minister emphasized the need to prioritize its development.

Umahi highlighted the specific area prone to flooding at the Koton Karfe section, stating that the only viable solution is the construction of a flyover to rise above the flood level. The proposed flyover would extend approximately 1.6 kilometers and require the construction of five segments. The minister intends to present the proposal to President Muhammadu Buhari, seeking his approval for this much-needed permanent solution.

Furthermore, Umahi urged contractors working on the road project to implement the use of concrete. He also announced plans to review and redesign the road contracts. The minister firmly believes that concrete roads are significantly more durable, with lifespans of up to 50 years, and require minimal maintenance. Thus, he has pledged to deliver concrete roads across the country, promoting longevity and reducing the need for frequent repairs.

The Minister of Works was accompanied by Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State and senior ministry officials during the tour. Governor Bello expressed his gratitude to the minister for selecting Kogi State as his first field assignment and assured him of the state government’s unwavering support. He also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing Umahi, referring to him as a competent and practical field officer who will effectively execute the Renewed Hope project.

“The road will be designed to withstand any future flooding, ensuring its durability throughout the test of time,” Bello remarked, appreciating President Buhari’s swift response to the issue by assigning the Minister of Works to address the problem promptly.

The construction of the proposed flyover on the Abuja-Lokoja road is a significant step towards resolving the perennial flooding issue, one that has plagued commuters and local residents for years. By combining strategic planning, expert engineering, and a commitment to utilizing concrete for enhanced durability, the Nigerian government aims to provide a sustainable solution that will stand strong against the forces of nature.
