There are strong indications that the scheduled arraignment of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on charges of breaching procurement laws and inflating contracts, has been postponed indefinitely.
The high court in the Federal Capital Territory, where the arraignment was meant to take place, did not have it listed on their cause list for Wednesday.
According to sources at the court, the delay was at the request of Emefiele, who is currently in custody.
Reliable sources have informed our correspondent that Emefiele and his co-accused, Saadat Yaro, have expressed interest in entering into a plea bargain agreement with the Federal Government.
Emefiele’s lawyer, Kehinde Akinlolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, confirmed the postponement of the arraignment and stated that a new date could be announced by Chief Judge, Justice Hussein Baba Yusuf.
As of now, the Department of State Services (DSS) operatives, who used to accompany Emefiele to court, and his legal team were absent.
Meanwhile, the court has proceeded with other cases on the cause list.
