Following the devastating collapse of a two-storey building on Lagos Street, Garki Village, Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has taken decisive action. Wike has ordered the immediate arrest of the building’s landlord and has personally ensured the payment of medical bills for the victims.

In a statement released by the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FCT FEMA), it was confirmed that two individuals lost their lives in the tragic incident, while 37 others were promptly evacuated and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Demonstrating his commitment to the welfare of the victims, Minister Wike visited the scene of the collapse on Thursday. During his visit, he instructed the Permanent Secretary of the FCT Administration, Adesola Olusade, to cover the medical fees of those currently seeking treatment. Additionally, Wike urged the FCTA’s Department of Development Control to promptly relocate the affected residents to suitable accommodations.

Emphasizing the importance of responsible construction practices, Wike called on all stakeholders to collaborate with government officials in ensuring the safety of citizens.

“This unfortunate incident is a direct consequence of individuals bypassing necessary protocols and constructing buildings without adhering to minimum safety standards,” Wike remarked. “It is a stark reminder of why proper urban planning is imperative in averting such tragedies.”

The Director of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, revealed that the building in question was located in an unplanned area and served as both a residential and commercial property.

Commending the swift actions of security agencies and dedicated contractors who participated in the rescue operations, Permanent Secretary Adesola Olusade expressed his gratitude for their invaluable support.

Meanwhile, Dr Idriss Abass, the Director-General of FCT FEMA, stated that multiple agencies have been actively involved in the search and rescue process since the incident occurred. He reassured the public that every effort was being made to ensure no one remained trapped beneath the debris.

As news of the tragic collapse spread, some of the victims shared their harrowing experiences and called for government assistance. Glory Perekeme, who operated a restaurant and bar within the building, estimated her losses to be around N5 million. She expressed her shock and desperation, urging the government to provide aid so that affected individuals could rebuild their lives.

Mrs. Ann Anyi, who owned a laundry business and sold shoes, lamented the total loss of her belongings. She described the pain she felt upon receiving the news in the middle of the night and expressed hope that her possessions might be salvaged from the wreckage once the rescue operation concluded.

As the investigation into the causes of the collapse continues, the actions taken by Minister Wike reflect a commitment to accountability and ensuring the well-being of those affected by the tragedy. It is a reminder of the importance of adherence to safety regulations and the significance of comprehensive urban planning.
