The federal government of Nigeria has expressed its commitment to investing in the harmonization of the country’s data, utilizing the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to achieve this goal.
This significant announcement was made by Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, through a tweet on Thursday from the official X account of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Media Centre.
Tunji-Ojo emphasized the ministry’s determination to ensure the success of this program, assuring the nation that the era of multiple ID registrations will soon be a thing of the past.
He further stated that NIMC has been given the mandate to harmonize the country’s database as President Ahmed Bola Tinubu aims to enhance the identity and security architecture of Nigerians.
Tunji-Ojo explained, “We no longer need to have separate identification numbers such as the BVN, Voter’s Card number, NIN, and Passport Number. Therefore, we need to collaborate with @nimc_ng to harmonize all these and eliminate duplications.”
“Once our data is harmonized, there will be seamless information exchange between agencies. This means that when our citizens require data for a passport or BVN, their information can be retrieved using their NIN,” Tunji-Ojo added.
He also highlighted the numerous benefits of data harmonization, stating, “This will not only eliminate unnecessary stress, costs, and energy expenditure but also optimize our processes.”
