Tribunal sacks Nasarawa PDP lawmaker, orders rerun

The National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Lafia has nullified the return of Ovey John of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the duly elected member representing Keffi East Constituency at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA).

This decision is coming after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared Ovey John the winner of the March 18 polls.

The three-member panel, headed by Justice Francisca Isong Nnang, while delivering the judgment on Sunday in Lafia, concluded that INEC erred in declaring the PDP candidate as the winner, overlooking Isah Adamu from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Tribunal explained that the margin with which Ovey led, standing at 1004 votes, fell below the total number of voters who were accredited in the four (4) polling units where elections were annulled by the INEC.

To further address this discrepancy, the Justice Francisca Isong Nnang-led Tribunal ordered a re-run at the four affected polling units, namely: Yarkade Primary School 003, Angwan Maiganga 014, Police Station 2 and Angwan Nepa within the constituency.
