President Bola Tinubu has expressed shock and deep sadness over the death of Emeritus Professor Umaru Shehu, a prominent Nigerian educationist and one of the pioneer medical doctors from Northern Nigeria. The Nonagenarian passed away on Monday at the age of 92.
Describing the late Professor Shehu’s demise as a big blow to Nigeria, President Tinubu acknowledged his invaluable contributions to the country, its people, and humanity as a whole. The President’s sentiments were conveyed through a statement released by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity.
“Emeritus Professor Shehu was a giant among that legendary generation of pioneering indigenous professionals in our country. His life story is filled with many firsts, as he achieved notable milestones in the field of medicine, education administration, and humanitarian services,” President Tinubu said in the statement.
Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Shehu, a renowned Professor of Medicine, served Nigeria with great distinction, making groundbreaking contributions to the fields of health and medical education both in Nigeria and globally. President Tinubu expressed gratitude for the honor and pride that Professor Shehu brought to the nation through his accomplishments.
Having received his training at prestigious institutions such as the defunct University College-Ibadan, the University of Liverpool, and the University of London, Professor Shehu dedicated his life to Nigeria’s medical and higher education sectors. He also made significant contributions on the international stage.
Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the people and Government of Borno State, the family of the deceased statesman, the Nigerian medical community, and all those mourning around the world. The loss of this Nigerian icon, mentor, father, son, and dedicated professional is deeply felt.
The President concluded by offering prayers for the eternal rest of the departed academician and statesman.
