The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso, remains committed to his campaign and will not step down for any rival, according to the party’s Presidential Campaign Council. On Sunday, the organization denounced recent insinuations suggesting otherwise, labeling them as a well-orchestrated campaign of calumny initiated by a particular political faction. The NNPP accused these factions of attempting to promote their own weak candidates, likening their efforts to selling expired drugs to a struggling Nigeria.
Ladipo Johnson, the spokesperson for the Kwankwaso/NNPP-PCC, addressed the situation in a statement issued in Abuja, titled “Is Kwankwaso still in the race? Is he running to win?” He emphasized that the questions surrounding Kwankwaso’s candidacy are being propagated by supporters of those who have failed the nation and who continue to pretend they are fit for the presidency. Johnson asserted that the campaign against Kwankwaso is not only orchestrated but also involves multiple political groups. He expressed pity for the political jobbers, suggesting that they face significant challenges in promoting their outdated candidates to the Nigerian electorate.
Furthermore, Johnson criticized these political jobbers for attempting to manipulate the narrative by using financial incentives to lure individual NNPP or Kwankwasiyya members. He described how these members then participate in staged “decamping shows,” where a few hired individuals don “new” red Kwankwasiyya caps, only to remove or discard them symbolically. These groups falsely claim to have garnered support from hundreds of thousands or even millions of members. Johnson referenced recent farcical displays in Kano and Bauchi, predicting that such antics will continue as desperate politicians approach the election.
Despite these challenges, Johnson conveyed a firm message to those attempting to sell “expired drugs” to Nigeria. He reassured supporters that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the NNPP are fully committed to contesting the election until the end. He noted that the RMK 2023 campaign is gaining momentum as it enters the final 30 days, with the candidate having already reached over 400 local governments. Kwankwaso is also scheduled to campaign in the only state he has yet to visit.
The NNPP maintains a clear strategic path to victory, and Johnson expressed confidence that, with divine support, the party and Kwankwaso will win the election. He acknowledged that the “expired” politicians will persist in their attempts to “buy” the loyalty and votes of Nigerians through underhanded tactics. However, he reiterated that the NNPP and Kwankwaso are in this race to win, emphasizing Kwankwaso’s competence, capacity, and political will to lead Nigeria in the right direction and fulfill the people’s mandate.
