Efforts by drug cartels from Brazil and Canada to smuggle a total of 126.95 kilograms of cocaine and skunk into Nigeria have been successfully thwarted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The operations took place at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and the Tincan seaport in Lagos.

On Friday, 20 January, NDLEA operatives intercepted a 42‑year‑old male passenger, Eze Ikenna, who had arrived from Brazil via Addis Ababa. A search of his two bags revealed 19 large sachets that he claimed contained herbal tea. The sachets were found to contain cocaine weighing 16.20 kilograms. This information was disclosed by Mr. Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy for the NDLEA.

In a related operation, a joint examination of container TCLU 7799237, which had arrived from Montreal, Canada, uncovered 110.75 kilograms of cannabis indica. The drug was concealed within two of the four vehicles in the container—a 2011 Toyota Sienna and a 2011 Honda Pilot SUV.

Babafemi also noted that the agency’s ongoing efforts to disrupt access to illicit opioids yielded significant results on Tuesday. A consignment of tramadol, tracked for several months, was traced to a warehouse in the Greenfield estate of Amuwo Odofin, Lagos. Upon opening the store, operatives recovered a total of 1,645,560 tramadol pills in various dosages, along with an additional 60,000 pills.
