A Benin-based constitutional lawyer, Olayiwola Afolabi, in Monday urged the National Assembly to urgently intervene in the Bill for a law to establish the Police Pension Board.
Afolabi, in a letter addressed to the Senate, advocated removal of the police from the Contributory Pension Scheme.
The legal practitioner regretted how the Bill was passed by the immediate past eighth National Assembly, but failed to secure a presidential assent.
The Ekiti born lawyer said most security agencies have since pulled out from the scheme, leaving only the Commissioner of Police down to the least officer in the force.
Against this backdrop, Mr Afolabi hinted when signed into law, the Bil would put smiles on the faces of police officers who had been enslaved by the contributory pension scheme.
βThe signing of the Bill into law will reduce corruption in the Nigeria police Force as every police officer will know that he is secured after retirement,β said the lawyer.
