Despite a challenging start to the 2022/23 season, Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey remains optimistic about Ajax’s chances of retaining their Eredivisie title. Under the management of Alfred Schreuder, Ajax played to a 1-1 draw against PSV Eindhoven at de Kuip stadium on Sunday, placing them fifth in the league, five points behind leaders Feyenoord. The team has struggled to find its footing after the departure of manager Erik Ten Hag, who moved to Manchester United, along with key players Lisandro Martinez, Antony, and Noussair Mazraoui. As a result, Ajax has not been able to replicate the form that led them to last season’s championship.
So far this season, Ajax has secured only nine wins out of 16 matches, with six draws and two losses. Their performance in the Champions League has also been disappointing, as they were eliminated after suffering four losses in six games within a group that included Napoli, Celtic, and Liverpool. Bassey, who joined the club last summer, has faced criticism from some club legends but has remained a vital part of Schreuder’s squad, consistently featuring in matches.
In a recent interview with Voetbalzone, Bassey expressed his optimism for the second half of the season. He stated, “We have confidence in our coach and we want to show that we are not done here. We have a lot of quality in the team and we are not worried. Let’s put the first half of the season behind us and focus on the future. We still have eighteen games to go. Every game is a final for us. We have to win them all, so I don’t feel any extra pressure.”
