The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has issued a directive to lecturers, instructing them to deny students access to lecture halls if they are dressed indecently. In a circular reviewed by The, Olatunji-Bello emphasized that students have repeatedly ignored the university’s established rules and regulations regarding dress code.
She urged provosts, deans, heads of departments, and faculty officers to ensure that students maintain a decent appearance within their respective colleges, schools, and faculties. The circular outlines specific modes of dress that are prohibited, including transparent dresses, mini and skimpy outfits, and any clothing that reveals sensitive parts of the body. Additionally, students are forbidden from wearing tattered and dirty jeans with holes, shirts that are unbuttoned or improperly buttoned, and items such as face caps or dark glasses that obscure their faces.
Other prohibited attire includes tight-fitting clothing, shirts and tops with obscene or seductive inscriptions, baggy or saggy trousers, and any form of indecent trousers. Body piercings and tattoos are also discouraged. Male students are specifically barred from wearing earrings and necklaces, as well as from styling their hair in ways such as plaiting, weaving, or bonding. Female students are cautioned against wearing unkempt or excessively large hairstyles, brightly colored artificial hair, and long eyelashes or nails.
The university management has made it clear that any student found in violation of the dress code on campus will face appropriate sanctions.
