The Police Service Commission (PSC) has refuted claims made in an online report that it endorsed the tenure extension of Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba. This denial was articulated in a statement by Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations at the PSC, which was obtained by our correspondent on Monday. Ani explained that the PSC became aware of an online publication alleging that the commission had approved the tenure elongation for the current IGP.

The publication purportedly included an interview with AIG Lawal Bawa, a commissioner representing the police on the commission. It claimed that Bawa confirmed the PSC’s lack of opposition to the IGP’s tenure extension. The article further quoted him as suggesting that if the IGP believed an extension would facilitate effective election monitoring, he should write to the president, indicating that the PSC would not object. However, Ani clarified that Bawa has since denied making such statements, asserting that he was misquoted. According to Ani, Bawa had actually stated that the decision rests solely with the President.

The PSC emphasized that it has not endorsed any tenure extension for the current IGP and noted that it was never consulted on this matter. The commission urged the media to refrain from sensationalism in their reporting, which can mislead the public in pursuit of greater readership. Furthermore, the PSC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a competent and efficient Nigerian police force, adhering to the rules and regulations that govern its operations.
