Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi announced on Sunday his commitment to transforming Nigeria from a consumption-based economy to a production-driven one, with the goal of alleviating poverty among Nigerians. Speaking to supporters in Kano State, Obi emphasized the importance of restoring Kano’s historical prominence in trade and industry. He stated, “We will pull people out of poverty by taking Nigeria from consumption to production and stop the sharing that has kept the country down.”

Obi expressed his determination to revive Kano’s status as a center of commerce, noting that it was once the go-to place for cash transactions. He lamented the current state of poverty in the region, asserting, “Before, if you wanted cash, you came to Kano, but what you see today is poverty everywhere.” He assured his supporters that he and his running mate, Datti, would work to restore Kano’s former glory.

Additionally, Obi outlined his vision for a secure and united Nigeria, where citizens would take pride in their nationality. He criticized the divisive tactics based on tribal and religious sentiments that have been used to manipulate the populace. Under his administration, he promised a Nigeria where people could freely move and conduct their business without fear. “Datti and I will not allow wastages. We will do exactly what we are saying,” Obi declared, highlighting their experience in both the public and private sectors as evidence of their capability to implement their plans.

As the election approaches, Obi urged voters to prioritize character and competence over religious sentiments. He challenged his audience to reject those who appeal to tribal or religious affiliations by asking, “If they come with their sentiments of religion and tribe, tell them to give you jobs or show you where anybody is buying things cheaper because of where he comes from or because of his religion.” He emphasized that the upcoming election is not about whose turn it is, but rather about reclaiming the country from those who have harmed it. Obi encouraged voters to seek candidates with proven track records, urging them to consider the character and past performance of those running for office.
