The Lagos State Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) announced on Monday that it has collapsed its structure and declared support for Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran, also known as Jandor, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming state elections. During the official defection, the SDP executive committee, led by Chairman Dabiraoluwa Adeyinka, expressed their belief that Adediran has the capacity to deliver effective governance in Lagos. They emphasized that their decision to join the PDP stemmed from their frustration with the ongoing cycle of status quo politics in Nigeria, which they believe imposes unaccountable leaders on the populace.

Adeyinka articulated their desire to move away from the entrenched system of godfatherism, stating, “We want people we can elect into power who we can assess and question. We seek fresh minds and a political system that will not hinder our future.” He expressed optimism that citizens should not have to leave Nigeria to live comfortably in their own country. The SDP leadership found the PDP appealing, citing figures like Funke Akindele as role models. They praised her grassroots approach, accessibility, and significant contributions to employment for Nigerian youths, describing her as a strong advocate for women and youth.

Adeyinka further emphasized the need for a collective effort to create a Lagos that serves everyone, not just a privileged few. He stated, “We want a Lagos that works for everybody, regardless of who you are. We aim to dismantle the system of godfatherism that has detrimental effects on young Nigerians.”

In his remarks, Adediran welcomed the SDP exco to the PDP, describing their decision to join as a pivotal step toward rescuing Lagos State. He highlighted the importance of forming alliances to challenge the existing political order. Adediran expressed gratitude for their commitment to the political process, stating, “This confirms the need for us to combine forces to achieve our aspirations.” He stressed that unity is essential for forming a formidable coalition capable of unseating the status quo in Lagos.
