As the 2022/23 season in the Italian top flight commenced, many anticipated that Juventus’ Dušan Vlahović would challenge Nigeria and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen for the league’s top scorer award. However, as the season has progressed, it has become clear that the spotlight is on Osimhen and Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman, who are now the primary contenders for the Paolo Rossi Award. Both players have made a significant impact, becoming the first in Serie A this season to reach double figures in goals. Osimhen currently leads the scoring chart with 13 goals from 15 league matches, while Lookman follows closely with 11 goals, despite playing as a winger.
Both players have demonstrated remarkable consistency, showing no signs of slowing down as they compete for the top scorer award. In addition to their goal-scoring prowess, Osimhen and Lookman are tied in assists, each contributing four to their teams. Their impressive performances were on full display last weekend. Osimhen scored a brace and provided an assist against Juventus on match-day 18, marking his 11th goal in the last 10 league games. He continued his scoring streak by netting another goal against Salernitana, helping Napoli secure a two-goal lead.
Lookman responded with an outstanding performance the following day, scoring a brace and adding an assist, keeping him in contention for the top scorer award. His performance against Juventus made him the fourth Atalanta player to score 10 or more goals in his first Serie A campaign after 19 matches, joining the ranks of Jorgen Leschly Sorensen, Karl Aage Hansen, and Poul Rasmussen. Lookman’s contributions have been vital for Atalanta, helping the team remain unbeaten in their last six Serie A matches against Juventus, which includes two wins and four draws. He also became the first Atalanta player since the 2006-07 season to score braces in three consecutive games across all competitions.
While Osimhen leads the scoring charts, the competition between him and Lookman promises to be intense as the season progresses. Their impressive performances have also led to a rise in their market valuations. At the start of the season, Osimhen was valued at €60 million, but his current form has increased his worth to €70 million. Similarly, Lookman’s market value has surged from €9 million at the beginning of the season to €20 million, reflecting his significant contributions to Atalanta.
