A woman in New York state has filed a civil suit against former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, accusing him of raping her in a limousine during the early 1990s, according to court filings. The plaintiff, who has requested to remain anonymous, submitted her complaint in early January under a temporary New York state law that permits victims of sexual assault to seek civil damages regardless of the statute of limitations.
In her affidavit, dated December 23, 2022, the woman states that she met Tyson at a nightclub in the early 1990s and subsequently followed him into his limousine, where she alleges he assaulted and raped her. She claims, “As a result of Tyson’s rape, I suffered and continue to suffer from physical, psychological, and emotional injury.” The woman is seeking $5 million in damages. As of late Tuesday, Tyson had not made any public statement regarding the allegations.
Mike Tyson, born in Brooklyn in 1966, had a tumultuous childhood before rising to prominence as the undisputed heavyweight champion in the 1980s, known for his ferocity in the ring and incredible punching power. However, after serving three years in prison for the rape of model Desiree Washington in 1992, he struggled to maintain his titles. In a notorious 1996 match, Tyson infamously bit off a piece of his opponent Evander Holyfield’s ear. Following his boxing career, Tyson faced challenges with depression and addiction but continued to attract media attention, notably through a one-man show that recounted the highs and lows of his life. Recently, he has ventured into the cannabis industry with his own brand of marijuana products and hosts a podcast.
