The Atiku-Okowa campaign organization has criticized the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for attempting to blackmail President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and for the APC-led Federal Government’s role in his “looming rejection by Nigerians.” The campaign expressed disappointment that Tinubu is seeking a face-saving measure ahead of what they predict will be a “shattering electoral defeat.” They accused him of shedding “crocodile tears” and claiming that the redesign of the naira notes and the ongoing fuel crisis—issues from which he has allegedly benefited—are plots to undermine the 2023 general elections.
Kola Ologbondiyan, the spokesperson for the campaign, issued a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, emphasizing that it is unfortunate for Tinubu to attempt to deceive Nigerians by exonerating himself while blaming others in the Buhari-led APC administration for the severe fuel scarcity plaguing the country. Ologbondiyan further noted that Tinubu’s character is called into question, as he is reportedly involved in corruption within the petroleum sector, yet pretends to care about the suffering of Nigerians, particularly as it begins to impact his political ambitions.
Ologbondiyan also highlighted that Tinubu’s lamentations regarding the naira redesign stem from the policy’s interference with his plans to use allegedly stashed slush funds for vote buying and manipulative schemes, including the funding of thugs to compromise the integrity of the 2023 presidential election through the establishment of the “jagaban army.” He asserted that only politicians who have historically relied on bullion vans to win elections would be troubled by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s monetary policy to redesign the naira.
Moreover, Ologbondiyan criticized Tinubu for attempting to distance himself from the Buhari administration, which he has claimed to have supported since 2015, just months before the end of its term. He questioned how Tinubu could accuse an administration he has been part of of sabotaging the 2023 elections unless he is revealing plans to Nigerians. He emphasized that the true patriots are the Nigerians willing to trek long distances to cast their votes, enduring the hardships imposed by the government Tinubu helped install.
