INEC Accused of Shifting Goalpost during Election, Peter Obi Vows to Continue Fight

In a surprising turn of events, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of shifting the goalpost in the middle of the game. This allegation comes after INEC failed to deliver on its promises of electronic transmission of election results, opting for manual collation instead, particularly in the Presidential election.

Obi, who sought redress at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal following INEC’s declaration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the election, was disheartened by the tribunal’s decision upholding INEC’s stance. Undeterred, Obi took his case to the Supreme Court, only to face defeat once again.

During a media briefing on Monday, Obi expressed his disappointment in INEC’s actions, stating that the electoral umpire had shifted the goalpost in the middle of the game. Despite the setback, he affirmed that the fight was far from over, declaring, “We are not giving up.” He further added, “This is just the beginning of our quest for a new Nigeria.”

As a result of the outcome, Obi acknowledged his party’s transition to the opposition, given the need to hold the ruling party accountable and strive for positive change.
