Ekiti NLC Instructs Members to Join Nationwide Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Ekiti State has issued a directive, instructing its members to partake in an indefinite strike until further notice.

The statement containing this directive was jointly signed by Kolapo Olatunde and Foluso Israel, the State Chairman and Secretary of the NLC Ekiti chapter.

The decision to embark on this indefinite strike was made following an assault on the national president of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State, during the joint National Executive Council meeting of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

In the statement, it was expressed that the decision to strike was a direct result of the brutalization and abduction of Comrade Joe Ajaero and other union members by the Imo State Government aides and security agencies during a protest against the injustices faced by workers and retirees. The issues protested include non-payment of several months of salaries, non-remittance of deductions, and the arbitrary declaration of some staff as ‘ghost’ workers, among other social vices.

All State Councils of the Congress have been directed to partake in this nationwide strike from midnight on the 14th of November, 2023, until further notice.

Similarly, the Ekiti State Council of the Congress, following a State Administrative Council (SAC) and State Executive Council (SEC), has communicated the directives of the National Headquarters, thereby instructing its members to comply with the national directive.

The statement concluded by expressing appreciation for the understanding and cooperation of all members.
