The Kano State Government, along with Islamic clerics from the Tijjaniyya, Qadiriyya, and Izala sects, has urged the Federal Government to extend the January 31 deadline established by the Central Bank of Nigeria for ceasing the acceptance of old naira notes. This appeal followed a meeting convened by Governor Ganduje, which included top government officials and the clerics at the Government House on Thursday.
According to a statement issued by Hassan Musa Fagge, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, the meeting highlighted the severe impact of the new naira note shortage on economic activities in Kano. The statement noted that the ongoing hardship faced by residents has paralyzed many aspects of daily life in the state.
In light of these challenges, the meeting called on President Muhammadu Buhari to demonstrate compassion by considering the difficulties experienced by the people of Kano and extending the Central Bank’s deadline. The statement also mentioned that the meeting was attended by Deputy Governor and APC governorship candidate Dr. Nasiru Gawuna, his running mate Murtala Sule Garo, APC chairman Abdullahi Abbas, and the Islamic clerics.
