Nollywood actor and movie director Kunle Iyiola Afod recently shared his thoughts on various topics, including his passion for Chelsea Football Club, in an interview with Ebenzer Bajela. Afod has been a dedicated Chelsea supporter for approximately 16 years, having developed a love for the club during the era of iconic players like Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, and Michael Ballack. He noted that Chelsea’s strong squad and diverse representation of black players at the time influenced his decision to support the club. Although he once considered being a Liverpool fan, he ultimately chose Chelsea due to their inclusive roster.

When discussing the color blue, Afod firmly disagreed with fans who claim that Manchester City wears the true sky blue. He argued that Chelsea’s achievements, including two Champions League titles, set them apart from City, who have yet to win that prestigious tournament. He humorously compared Manchester City’s blue to the new Naira notes, suggesting it lacks the authenticity of Chelsea’s blue.

Reflecting on José Mourinho’s recent 60th birthday, Afod expressed his admiration for the coach, asserting that Mourinho remains the “Special One.” He explained that Mourinho’s absence from the English football scene has contributed to his reduced media presence. Afod believes that the dynamics between players and coaches have shifted over the years, with players now often placed above coaches, leading to a lack of respect for managerial authority.

Regarding Liverpool’s struggles, Afod identified a defensive crisis as the root of their issues, despite the team’s strong attacking force. He emphasized that the departure of Sadio Mané is not the sole reason for their current form, as the team still boasts talents like Mohamed Salah.

Afod’s favorite Super Eagles player is Segun Odegbami, whom he fondly remembers for his skill and impact on the team. Following Odegbami, he admires Austin Okocha for his effortless style of play, noting that Okocha’s lack of recognition compared to goal-scorers like Nwankwo Kanu is unfortunate. Afod believes that Okocha’s dribbling skills would outshine Kanu’s if they were to play together today.

The conversation then shifted to the ongoing debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Afod confidently stated that Messi is the superior player, highlighting his natural talent compared to Ronaldo’s hard work. He likened the debate to other longstanding discussions in various fields, suggesting that it is a natural part of sports culture. He also expressed admiration for Zlatan Ibrahimović, noting that some players, like Robert Lewandowski, do not receive the recognition they deserve.

When asked about the current state of the Super Eagles, Afod lamented the influence of individuals who lack football knowledge in the management of the national team. He expressed disappointment that some talented players, such as Bukayo Saka, are hesitant to represent Nigeria. He believes that combining these players with committed home-based talents could significantly improve the team’s performance.

Despite his deep love for football, Afod revealed that he did not play the sport as a child due to his strict upbringing. Instead, he participated in discus throw, which he enjoyed for its technical aspects. He noted a shift in contemporary attitudes, where parents now encourage their children to pursue football, driven by the sport’s financial potential and growing popularity.

Afod affirmed that he would support his children if they wished to play football. Although one of his sons showed some interest, he ultimately preferred singing. He emphasized the importance of allowing children to pursue their passions without pressure, reflecting a modern approach to parenting in sports.
