The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council has asserted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) cannot salvage its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, from impending electoral defeat through attempts at damage control. The PDP PCC claims that the ruling party, recognizing its loss in the presidential election, is now searching for scapegoats. During an APC campaign event at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Tinubu expressed concerns about a potential sabotage of the upcoming election, linking it to the ongoing fuel crisis and public discontent regarding the naira redesign.

Tinubu’s remarks drew criticism from the opposition, who interpreted them as an indictment of both the APC and the Federal Government. In response, Bayo Onanuga, the Director of Media and Publicity for the APC PCC, refuted the idea that Tinubu’s comments were aimed at President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Onanuga clarified that Tinubu was merely highlighting the sabotage allegedly perpetrated by “some fifth columnists in the system, possibly in collusion with the PDP.”

However, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, a spokesperson for the PDP PCC, countered Onanuga’s claims, stating that Nigerians clearly understood Tinubu’s statements. He emphasized that it was evident the APC was engaging in damage control and seeking to blame others as a result of their electoral loss. Aniagwu remarked, “Bayo Onanuga should look for someone else to blame. Nigerians were the ones who listened to Tinubu. They were the ones who made meaning out of what he said. Nobody misunderstood him.”

Similarly, the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council criticized Tinubu’s comments, suggesting they revealed an alleged scheme by the APC to undermine the rule of law and deny Nigerians their right to choose their leaders. Yunusa Tanko, the spokesperson for the Obi-Datti campaign, condemned Tinubu’s position, recalling that some APC members had previously challenged the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for accreditation. Tanko asserted that the APC’s actions reflect a consistent pattern of damage control and manipulation, stating, “Nigerians have seen their misdeeds. They have put it in practical terms and Nigerians have seen that they intend to manipulate the system against the people’s will and subvert the rule of law.”
