On Saturday, Memphis police permanently deactivated the unit of five officers involved in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols, a young Black man. This incident has reignited nationwide calls for police reform, highlighting ongoing concerns about police brutality. The shocking death of the 29-year-old Nichols has reopened a painful dialogue across the United States regarding officer violence, particularly in light of the promises for reform that followed the death of George Floyd in 2020.

The five officers, who are also Black, were part of Memphis’ Scorpion unit, which was established in November 2021 to reduce illegal activity in high-crime areas by increasing police presence. However, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) announced on Saturday that it was “in the best interest of all to permanently deactivate the SCORPION Unit.” The statement noted that the officers currently assigned to the unit fully supported this decision. Nichols’s family expressed their approval of the move through a statement from their lawyers, describing it as “both appropriate and proportional to the tragic death of Tyre Nichols, and also a decent and just decision for all citizens of Memphis.” They further expressed hope that other cities would take similar actions with their saturation police units to foster greater trust within their communities.

Police Chief Cerelyn Davis, who established the unit, previously stated that it had initially been successful in reducing crime in 2022, following a record high of 345 homicides the year before, which had prompted significant community outcry. The SCORPION unit, which stands for Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods, was intended to reduce gun violence, enhance visibility in communities, and address rising crime rates. Despite the nationwide calls for police reform following Floyd’s death, the number of fatalities during police interactions reached a 10-year high in 2022, with 1,186 deaths reported, according to the website Mapping Police Violence.

The officers involved in Nichols’s death are facing second-degree murder charges, along with indictments for aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping. Following the release of graphic video footage showing the violent encounter, several key questions remain unanswered, particularly regarding the reasons behind Nichols’s initial stop.
