Chief Justice Warns Federal High Court Judges: Do Not Take Your Appointments for Granted

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has issued a stern warning to Judges of the Federal High Court, cautioning them against complacency in fulfilling their judicial duties.

Speaking at the opening of the 2023 Conference of Judges of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice Ariwoola emphasized the paramount importance of upholding the law and rules when delivering judgments and rulings. He urged the judges not to succumb to external pressures, emphasizing the significance of composing unbiased and enduring judgments that withstand the scrutiny of higher courts.

Highlighting the pivotal role of the Federal High Court as the premier forum for addressing election-related matters in Nigeria, Justice Ariwoola underscored the significance of the judges’ responsibilities and called upon them to uphold the court’s integrity and reputation. “Being a judge and the lord of courts is not a child’s play. You must work diligently to justify your appointments and safeguard the sanctity of the court,” he asserted.

Acknowledging the court’s distinguished legacy and pivotal role in the country, Justice Ariwoola urged the judges to demonstrate unwavering commitment in discharging their duties, devoid of any actions that could compromise the court’s standing.

Commending the judges for their dedication and marking the 50th anniversary of the court, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, reflected on the court’s remarkable growth since its establishment. From its humble beginnings with a single courtroom and five judges in Lagos, the court has expanded to encompass 37 divisions and 95 judges, signifying its enduring impact on the nation’s judicial landscape.

Justice Tsoho further highlighted the recent induction and deployment of 23 additional judges to bolster the court’s efficacy. Shedding light on the conference’s purpose, he underscored its significance in fostering constructive dialogue to address prevailing challenges and chart a path forward for the court.

The conference serves as a platform for judges to engage in robust discussions, analyze pertinent issues, and devise strategies to surmount obstacles, ultimately fortifying the judiciary’s ability to dispense justice effectively.

As the Federal High Court commemorates its rich heritage and confronts contemporary challenges, the admonitions of the Chief Justice resound as a call to action for the judges to uphold the court’s stature and deliver justice without compromise.
