In a heartwarming display of compassion and resilience, the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, welcomed four out of the five students from the Federal University Dutsin-Ma who were recently rescued from the clutches of bandits. The emotional reunion took place at the State House, Presidential Villa, where Mrs. Tinubu expressed the nation’s collective joy at the safe return of the young women.

“Your safe return marks a moment of triumph and a testament to the unwavering efforts of our law enforcement agencies,” Mrs. Tinubu remarked, as she addressed the girls amidst a backdrop of relief and celebration. The first lady’s words encapsulated the anguish felt by the students, their families, and all Nigerians during their 70 days in captivity, while emphasizing the pivotal role of education in the fight against terrorism and criminality.

Emphasizing the pivotal role of education in combatting the challenges of terrorism and criminality, Mrs. Tinubu acknowledged the psychological and educational support needed for the girls as they commence the healing process after enduring a harrowing ordeal. “We, at the Renewed Hope Initiative, are committed to providing you with guidance and support to reach your full potential,” she affirmed, underlining the importance of ensuring that the traumatic experience does not curtail their educational aspirations and career pursuits.

Underscoring the government’s commitment to aiding the girls’ recovery and future prospects, each rescued student was awarded a scholarship grant of N1million and a brand-new laptop by the Renewed Hope Initiative. Furthermore, the parents of the girls were earmarked to receive N2million each, with an additional N1million allocated to the vice chancellor of the university as a gesture of support from the federal government.

Expressing gratitude for the safe return of the students, Mrs. Tinubu lauded the collective efforts of the Office of the National Security Adviser and various law enforcement agencies, affirming their decisive role in securing the girls’ release. The meeting was attended by the parents of the rescued girls, the deputy vice chancellor of the Federal University Dutsin Ma Katsina, and representatives from the Inspector General of Police and the National Counter-Terrorism Center.
