Liverpool’s disastrous season faced another setback on Sunday as the holders were eliminated from the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat to Brighton. Kaoru Mitoma’s exceptional control and finish in stoppage time secured the Seagulls a place in the fifth round. Although Liverpool initially took the lead at the Amex Stadium through Harvey Elliott, they have now managed only one victory in their last six matches. Lewis Dunk equalized for Brighton before halftime, and the home side was deserving of their win, which was capped off by Mitoma’s moment of brilliance. The Japanese winger expertly cushioned Pervis Estupinan’s cross, flicked the ball over Joe Gomez, and fired it high past Alisson Becker in the 92nd minute.
Currently, Liverpool finds itself languishing in ninth place in the Premier League, a staggering 21 points behind league leaders Arsenal. Their exit from the FA Cup leaves the Champions League as their only remaining opportunity for silverware this season. Last year, Jurgen Klopp’s squad was on the verge of achieving a historic quadruple, which included their first FA Cup triumph in 16 years. However, Klopp is still searching for solutions to reverse the team’s decline after suffering a second defeat on the south coast in just 15 days. He previously described Brighton’s 3-0 victory in their last encounter as the worst performance of his managerial career.
In this match, Liverpool at least showed more fight, although they will lament two significant early chances missed by Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian forward played a crucial role in Liverpool’s goal by releasing Elliott, whose powerful strike proved too much for goalkeeper Jason Steele to handle. Brighton responded quickly, equalizing within nine minutes when Tariq Lamptey’s powerful shot was deflected past the helpless Alisson by Dunk. The hosts were missing Moises Caicedo, who had taken to social media on Friday in an attempt to force a move to Arsenal. Brighton had already lost Leandro Trossard, who scored a hat-trick against Liverpool earlier in the season, to the Gunners this month. Despite these absences, Brighton’s performance did not falter, and Liverpool found themselves fortunate to escape further trouble during the second half. Ibrahima Konate and Fabinho were particularly lucky to avoid red cards for their challenges on Alexis Mac Allister and Evan Ferguson. Alisson made a brilliant save from Solly March’s effort following Mitoma’s inventive cross, while Konate also blocked a shot from Ferguson. Ultimately, Brighton’s relentless pressure paid off when Mitoma scored his fourth goal in six games.
