A group known as Arewa4Asiwaju has praised Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, for his vocal opposition to the January 31 deadline originally set for the exchange of old naira notes for the redesigned currency. The group asserts that Tinubu’s declaration in Abeokuta, Ogun State, played a crucial role in prompting the Federal Government to extend the deadline to February 10. They believe this extension averted potential unrest that was brewing due to widespread public dissatisfaction with the initial deadline.
Arewa4Asiwaju attributes the 10-day extension of the naira swap to what they describe as Tinubu’s sagacity and courage. They stated, “It was this courage and purposeful leadership shown by the Asiwaju that compelled the government to go back on its earlier ‘no going back’ stance.” The group expressed that Nigerians owe Tinubu a debt of gratitude for intervening and risking everything to rectify the problematic situation created by the initial deadline.
In a statement released in Kaduna on Monday by the group’s North-Central coordinator, Aliyu Pass, it was noted, “Whether anyone wants to believe it or not, it is the courageous sagacity displayed by Tinubu that invariably saved the Nigerian commoner from suffering the pains of the initial timeline set by the Federal Government for the unpopular new currency swap.” The statement further emphasized that Tinubu’s actions not only prevented public anger from escalating but also demonstrated his commitment as a statesman.
The statement highlighted Tinubu’s decisive move during his Abeokuta declaration, where he raised concerns about the dangers associated with the new naira policy, its timing, and the deadline. Following this, the President reportedly invited Tinubu to Daura, where he maintained his position, arguing that the policy was unnecessary, unpopular, and detrimental to the common man, potentially leading to greater conflict. The group concluded by reiterating that the nation owes Tinubu immense gratitude for his intervention in what was clearly a troubling situation.
