Kenyan Authorities Seek Extended Detention for Prime Suspect in Meru Blogger ‘Sniper’ Murder Case

Kenyan authorities are seeking an extension of 21 days to detain Vincent Kirimi, also known as Supuu, the prime suspect in the brutal murder of Meru blogger known as Sniper. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has also instructed the Inspector General of Police to submit the murder inquiry file within seven days.

Supuu was re-arrested after a Meru court dismissed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ (DCI) request for custodial orders based on suspicion of abduction. Instead, the court granted the suspect bail, ordering him to report to the police station every 14 days, with a bail set at Sh20,000.00.

The ODPP has taken decisive steps in this high-profile case, withdrawing a previous application and assembling a team of Senior Prosecutors to oversee the investigations. The ODPP, led by Renson Ingonga, is committed to upholding justice without regard for the social status of the perpetrators.

The murder inquiry file is set to be reviewed in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya and relevant laws, with a pledge to issue appropriate directions once the evidence is thoroughly evaluated.

The gruesome discovery of Sniper’s body in Mutonga River, Tharaka Nithi County, on December 16, 2023, prompted an autopsy which revealed signs of strangulation, fractured ribs, head injuries, and indications of oxygen deprivation. Government pathologist Johansen Oduor conducted the autopsy and emphasized the need for toxicology tests to determine if substances were involved in the crime.

Following this horrific incident, calls for swift and thorough investigations have emerged from Sniper’s family, fellow bloggers, and political figures, urging accountability for those responsible. As the case unfolds, the demand for justice reverberates across the nation and beyond.
