The Nigerian entertainment industry is in mourning following the demise of veteran Yoruba actor, Deji Aderemi, popularly known as Olofa Ina. The 73-year-old actor passed away on Thursday in his hometown of Ede, Osun State. His death was announced by prominent figures in the film industry, including film producer Seun Oloketuyi and actor Saidi Balogun, through social media platform Instagram.
Olofa Ina, a highly respected figure in Yoruba cinema, gained fame for his memorable roles in films such as “Iyawo Are” (2006), “Ikilo Agba” (2008), and “Okobo Dimeji” (2008). His remarkable contributions to the industry earned him a special place in the hearts of many film enthusiasts.
Before pursuing a full-time career in Theatre Art Practice, Olofa Ina served as a grade II officer at the Ministry of Works and Transport in Ibadan from 1970 to 1977. He honed his skills in carpentry and joinery at Olukorede Furniture Industry before establishing the Olofa Ina Theatre Group in 1972. His theatre group was renowned for presenting epic tales of Yoruba warlords from the 18th and 19th centuries.
In addition to his artistic endeavors, Olofa Ina made headlines in 2021 when he publicly expressed his views on a controversial issue involving actress Iyabo Ojo and Comedienne Princess. He took a stand by showing support for Omiyinka Olanrewaju (Baba Ijesha) and criticized Ojo, alleging disrespect during his efforts to intervene in the situation. His involvement underscored his commitment to upholding principles within the industry.
The passing of Olofa Ina leaves a void in the Yoruba film community, with many coming to terms with the loss of a talented actor and dedicated advocate. His legacy will undoubtedly endure, as his contributions continue to shape the landscape of Nigerian cinema.
