In a resolute declaration, Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has pledged an exceptional and secure organization for the forthcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
Speaking at a press conference in Abidjan, Motsepe underscored CAF’s unwavering commitment to collaborating closely with the host country to deliver a remarkable tournament, emphasizing the avoidance of past errors witnessed during the last event in Cameroon.
Motsepe expressed his satisfaction with the prevailing determination and dedication, exclaiming, “I am satisfied that there is a huge amount of determination and commitment and I think we are on the right track.” He added, “The Cameroon accident was absolutely avoidable. I am satisfied the appropriate steps have been taken to make sure we will totally avoid the painful experience we had in Cameroon.”
The 2021 AFCON in Cameroon was overshadowed by a tragic stampede at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde, resulting in the loss of eight fans’ lives and injuries to several others during the round of 16 match between Cameroon and the Comoros. Motsepe acknowledged that lessons were learned and stressed ongoing efforts to safeguard an incident-free tournament.
