The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, hailed former Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the Concord Group of newspapers, Doyin Abiola, as a media icon who championed the truth and dedicated herself to promoting good governance. This congratulatory message was conveyed in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled “President Buhari celebrates Dr. Doyin Abiola at 80.”
Born on February 1, 1943, Dr. Abiola made history in 1986 when she became the Managing Director and Publisher of National Concord Newspaper, marking her as the first Nigerian woman to hold the position of editor-in-chief of a daily newspaper in Nigeria. In his birthday message, Buhari praised Dr. Abiola for her remarkable skills and brilliance, which enabled her to achieve this significant milestone at the age of 43.
According to Adesina, President Buhari shares in the joy of this milestone with the distinguished media personality and opinion leader, who began her journalism career in 1969. Dr. Abiola earned a doctorate in Communications and Political Science in 1979, bringing depth and breadth to the publishing industry through her extensive experience. The President emphasized that Dr. Abiola’s passion for research and learning greatly influenced her intellectual contributions to the vibrant Nigerian media landscape, as she fearlessly pursued the truth and worked diligently for the benefit of the majority, particularly in the realms of good governance and democracy.
Buhari also acknowledged the historic roles Dr. Abiola played throughout her career, including her work as a columnist with Daily Sketch in the 1960s, her position as Features Writer at Daily Times, her role as Group Features Editor, and her pioneering tenure as the daily Editor of National Concord, where she became the first female Editor-in-Chief in Nigeria. In closing, he prayed that Almighty God would grant the octogenarian good health and bless her family.
