The Police Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has called on Nigerians to report anyone in possession of live ammunition in a bid to combat the proliferation of arms in Nigeria, as shared in a statement on his official social media account.
Adejobi emphasized the dangers posed by these deadly items, locally referred to as “èpà” or “groundnuts” in the streets, and stressed that they should only be in the possession of authorized security personnel. He urged civilians to promptly report any sightings of these materials with individuals other than statutory security agents.
Notably, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, recently announced the parading of 34 suspects involved in various crimes, including armed robbery, theft, cultism, and illegal possession of firearms. Within a month of assuming office, Fayoade highlighted the successful resolution of 14 cases and the recovery of a significant cache of firearms, including live ammunition and cartridges, alongside other weapons and illegal items such as fake registration plates and charms.
This call to action by the Police Force serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to address security challenges in Nigeria and the importance of collective vigilance in curbing the proliferation of arms and ammunition. It underscores the critical role that citizens play in supporting law enforcement and enhancing public safety.
