The brave troops of Sector 6, Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS, exhibited remarkable courage as they successfully thwarted a vicious attack by bandits on the peaceful Okokolo community in Agatu Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue. The Force Commander of OPWS, Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, revealed to the press in Makurdi that the troops valiantly forced the bandits to scatter after a fierce three-hour battle on Thursday.

Tragically, two soldiers and one member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps sacrificed their lives during this harrowing encounter, while two other soldiers sustained injuries. Despite this heavy toll, those injured were promptly rushed to the Air Force Hospital in Makurdi and are currently receiving the necessary medical care.

Major General Igbinomwanhia explained that upon receiving intelligence about the bandits’ intentions, the troops swiftly mobilized to Okokolo community, located approximately 15 km from their base at Akwu. As they arrived, they confronted the bandits launching an assault on the community and engaged them in a fierce gun battle lasting three grueling hours. The bandits, unable to withstand the indomitable spirit of the troops, retreated in disarray, leaving behind their deceased and wounded comrades.

While celebrating the successful defense of Okokolo, Major General Igbinomwanhia soberly acknowledged the high price paid, with three brave troops laying down their lives to protect the community from harm. He also praised the injured soldiers for their resilience and emphasized the importance of staying focused on the mission of eradicating criminal elements from the state.

The gallant troops received assurance of unwavering support from the Chief of Defence Staff as they continue their arduous task of restoring enduring peace in Benue. Major General Igbinomwanhia conveyed gratitude to Governor Hyacinth Alia for his steadfast support to OPWS and pledged that the troops would relentlessly pursue the criminals to their hideouts.

In a show of solidarity and encouragement, the state’s Deputy Governor Sam Ode, representing the governor, visited the troops of Sector 6 at their base in Akwu to express condolences and rally the troops to stand resolute against criminal elements. Affirming the state government’s commitment, Ode assured that the injured would receive all necessary assistance.

This indomitable spirit and sacrifice of the Nigerian military in safeguarding the community must be recognized and commended, as they forge ahead in their mission to uphold peace and security in the region.
