Nigeria’s Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, has provided insight into the team’s dynamics at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. Despite this, Nwabali disclosed that his teammate Francis Uzoho remains the first-choice goalkeeper for the team.

In an exclusive interview with The Guardian UK reporter, Osasu Obayiuwana, Nwabali expressed his humility and readiness to seize any opportunities that come his way. “To be honest, it has been nice, it has been God throughout, but I am not the first choice. Uzoho is still the first choice, I only had an opportunity to play,” Nwabali stated. He further conveyed his commitment to giving his best whenever he gets the chance to play.

The Chippa United shot-stopper reflected on his unexpected role, emphasizing his preparedness despite the initial uncertainty. “I was not expecting to play the opening game, but I am ready even when I got the call-up but I was not sure of a starting place,” Nwabali remarked, highlighting his dedication to the team’s success.

Moreover, Nwabali shared a behind-the-scenes moment with Nigeria’s head coach, Jose Peseiro, shedding light on the coach’s demeanor and communication style. “He [Peseiro] didn’t talk to me initially. It was a day before our game, after our last training he came to me, ‘Stanley, keep it to yourself, you are going to play,'” Nwabali revealed. He affirmed his unwavering readiness in response to Peseiro’s decision, demonstrating his commitment to the team’s strategies.

Nwabali’s revelation provides a compelling glimpse into the intricacies of the Super Eagles’ AFCON journey and the camaraderie within the squad. As the tournament unfolds, Nwabali’s humility and determination serve as testaments to the team’s depth and unity, elevating the Super Eagles’ pursuit of AFCON glory on the international stage.
