The Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran, also known as Jandor, has expressed his determination to continue his campaign despite ongoing attacks by hoodlums allegedly backed by the ruling party in the state. In light of accusations from the ruling party claiming he was responsible for an attack during a campaign event in Surulere, Adediran emphasized his commitment to sharing his manifesto with all wards across various local government areas.
During a press conference held in Ikeja on Sunday, Adediran recounted his experiences and criticized the ruling party for distorting the facts. He stated that it was crucial for him to address the situation, as the safety of the public was at risk. He questioned the logic behind the ruling party’s claims, stating, “We were the ones campaigning in Surulere; is it possible that we went to campaign and started attacking the very people we were trying to reach?” He asserted that the sequence of events clearly indicated the ruling party’s involvement in the attacks, despite their attempts to manipulate the narrative.
Adediran further explained that since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifted the ban on campaigns for the governorship election on October 12, 2022, the Lagos State government, led by the APC, had deliberately obstructed his campaign visibility. He noted that outdoor operators in the state were instructed not to support his campaign. In response, his team adapted their strategy by initiating a ward-to-ward tour, which began on October 19, 2022, in Alimosho. Their second visit was to Badagry LGA, where they faced an attack during their campaign efforts.
He detailed additional incidents of violence, including an attack in Agege on January 21, 2023, and another in Kosofe later that same month. Adediran reported these incidents to the state Commissioner of Police, expressing concern over the escalating violence against his campaign. He highlighted that in nearly every location he visited, hoodlums were dispatched to disrupt his interactions with the public.
