The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against internet fraud, apprehending 24 individuals who were being groomed as cybercriminals in Uyo, Akwa Ibom. According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the arrests were made on Monday following a tip-off, leading to the discovery of a storey building believed to be a hub for training internet fraudsters in Ewet Housing Estate and Nelson Mandela area.
The operation, driven by intelligence, resulted in the apprehension of all-male suspects at two locations in Uyo. Among the items recovered from the premises and the suspects were five luxury cars, 18 laptops, 17 mobile phones, and an internet router. Mr. Oyewale highlighted that the suspects will face legal action once investigations are finalized.
The EFCC’s resolute action against cybercrime is a testament to their commitment to combating illegal online activities. The crackdown on these trainee fraudsters not only disrupts their operations but also sends a clear message that such criminal activities will not be tolerated.
