# Kenya Takes Helm of UNWTO Committee on Tourism and Competitiveness
Nairobi – Kenya’s ascendancy to lead the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) Committee on Tourism and Competitiveness for a three-year term marks a significant stride for the nation’s influence in the global tourism landscape.
The announcement, unveiled during the inaugural session of the committee at the UNWTO’s headquarters in Madrid, Spain, confirmed Kenya’s victory after surpassing Thailand and Malta in two rounds of voting.
Alfred Mutua, Kenya’s Tourism Cabinet Secretary, hailed the milestone as a historic moment, underscoring the country’s pivotal role in shaping international tourism dynamics. He emphasized the far-reaching impact of the appointment, citing Kenya’s pivotal position in catalyzing dialogue, forging alliances, and advocating for best practices in the tourism sphere.
“We shall champion initiatives that will help in the creation of jobs, protecting the planet as well as driving inclusive growth that can be felt and be impactful within communities,” Mutua affirmed, outlining Kenya’s commitment to leveraging its newfound position for sustainable and inclusive tourism development.
UNWTO Executive Director and Special Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Zoritsa Urosevic, lauded Kenya’s election, expressing confidence in the country’s capacity to steer the Committee effectively. Urosevic underscored Kenya’s dedication to sustainable tourism, noting its substantial contributions to the broader African tourism landscape.
Kenya’s successful bid was bolstered by its robust tourism competitiveness pillars, including destination marketing, diversified tourism offerings, sustainable practices, cultural and natural heritage preservation, skills development programs, and technological innovation. Additionally, the country’s advancements in infrastructural development, encompassing roads, airports, and hospitality amenities, were pivotal in reinforcing its appeal.
Assuming the chairmanship of the UNWTO Committee on Tourism and Competitiveness between 2024 and 2027, Kenya is poised to spearhead collaborative endeavors aimed at enhancing global tourism competitiveness, fostering innovation, and ensuring sustainable sectoral growth.
