In a recent development, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has expressed his deep concern over the recurring attacks in Plateau State, resulting in numerous fatalities and displacements. The Speaker, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, strongly denounced the renewed attacks and hostility in communities around Mangu Local Government Area of the state, emphasizing that “enough is enough” regarding the Plateau killings.
Amidst the distressing situation, Mr. Abbas has announced his intention to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the escalating violence. Furthermore, upon the House’s resumption from the Christmas and New Year break, the Speaker has pledged to adopt a resolute stance on the matter. It has been disclosed that the House is set to convene a security summit on January 30, 2024, aimed at formulating sustainable strategies to address the prevailing security challenges in the Northern region and other parts of the country.
The recent wave of attacks in Plateau State, particularly in Mangu LGA, has triggered widespread concern. These attacks, which commenced in late December 2023, have claimed numerous lives and prompted the Plateau State government to impose a 24-hour curfew in the affected area.
Speaker Abbas has fervently appealed for peace, urging all parties involved to coexist harmoniously. He stressed the significance of fostering unity and solidarity amongst the people, underscoring the pivotal role of peaceful cohabitation in societal advancement. Furthermore, he urged Nigerians to uphold the principle of being their “brothers’ keepers” regardless of their geographical location.
Expressing profound dismay at the incessant killings in Plateau State, Speaker Abbas emphasized the imperative need to redress the prevailing security situation. He implored the security agencies to take decisive measures to contain the escalating tensions in Plateau. Additionally, the Speaker commended the Plateau State government for taking proactive measures, including the imposition of a curfew, while emphasizing the necessity for concerted efforts to achieve enduring peace in the state.
