Nigerian Air Force Acknowledges Accidental Killing of 37 Herders in Nasarawa

The Nigerian Air Force has taken responsibility for the tragic air strike in January 2023 that resulted in the unintended death of 37 herders in the Rukubi community of Doma Local Government Area in Nasarawa State.

Air Marshall Hassan Abubakar, the Chief of Air Staff, addressed the incident during a visit to Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, emphasizing that the airstrikes were conducted based on intelligence indicating the presence of suspected terrorists on motorcycles near Rukubi in the Doma local government area. The region had been grappling with heightened insecurity, including killings, kidnappings, and terrorism.

Expressing deep regret for the civilian casualties, Abubakar emphasized that the Nigerian Air Force’s paramount duty is to safeguard the lives and property of citizens, disavowing any deliberate intent to harm those they are mandated to protect.

In response, Governor Sule commended the Air Force for their efforts in preserving peace in the state, particularly in the eastern region. He recognized the Air Chief’s compassionate approach to military operations, underscoring the state’s support for the victims since the tragic event occurred a year ago.

The Air Chief’s visit extended to the palace of the Emir of Lafia, where he engaged with the affected individuals and representatives of Fulani groups, including Miyetti-Allah Kautal Hore and Miyetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

The acknowledgment of responsibility and efforts towards reconciliation signal a commitment to transparency, accountability, and the prevention of similar tragedies in the future. While no compensation can fully heal the wounds of those who have suffered such profound loss, the steps taken by the Nigerian Air Force and the collaboration with local authorities and communities pave the way for understanding, healing, and the potential mitigation of future mishaps.
