President Bola Tinubu has taken a strong stance against the unfair portrayal of Nigerians as inherently corrupt during a forum organized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu commended the EFCC for its role in awakening the nation’s conscience and rejected the blanket mislabeling that tarnishes the reputation of the majority of Nigerian citizens.
Tinubu emphasized the need to recognize the global contributions of Nigerians in various fields and denounced the association of internet crimes with the entire Nigerian populace, stressing the nation’s diversity and resilient nature. He acknowledged the global threat of cybercrimes and assured unwavering government support to the EFCC in combating digital offenses. Furthermore, he highlighted the establishment of a Students Loan Board to dissuade youths from engaging in unlawful activities and encouraged them to seize lawful opportunities for national prosperity.
During the event, religious leaders and officials echoed concerns over corruption’s detrimental effects and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to combat the trend. They urged the government to strengthen the justice system, appoint officials with unblemished records, and engage in dialogue and structural reforms to address systemic issues.
EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede, emphasized the agency’s commitment to prevention strategies and collaboration with faith-based organizations to combat corruption. He proposed a reconsideration of the commission’s anti-graft strategy with a new focus on prevention in line with the recommendations of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).
The forum served as a platform for influential voices to advocate for a fair and accurate representation of Nigeria and its citizens, challenging stereotypes and promoting unity in the fight against corruption.
