INEC Halts Elections in Kunchi/Tsanyawa and Other Constituencies Due to Disruptions

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken the decision to suspend ongoing re-run elections in specific constituencies across Nigeria. This move comes in response to various challenges including disruptions, irregularities, and the abduction of election officials.

The affected areas and the reasons for the suspension are as follows:
– Kunchi/Tsanyawa State Constituency, Kano State: Elections in all ten Polling Units in Kunchi LGA have been suspended due to invasion, vandalization, and disruption by thugs.
– Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State: Elections in two Polling Units (Village Hall, EdemUrua 003 in Ini LGA and Village Hall Mbiabong Ikot Udo 003 in Ikono LGA) have been suspended after all election materials were carted away by hoodlums.
– Enugu South 1 State Constituency, Enugu State: Elections in all eight Polling Units have been suspended as the original results sheets were not available for inspection by voters before the commencement of polls.

The Commission’s decision aligns with the provisions of Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022. Further necessary measures for the affected constituencies will be announced after the Commission’s meeting on Monday.

INEC has called upon security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incidents. The Commission remains committed to investigating any breaches involving its officials.
