High Turnout and Peaceful Conduct Mark Cross River By-Election

The recent by-election in Cross River State witnessed a commendable voter turnout, earning praise from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Gabriel Yomere, and the state’s Commissioner of Police, Gyogon Grimah. Taking place in Yala and Obanliku LGAs, as well as in the Akamkpa/Biase federal constituency, the by-elections were notably peaceful, with minimal security concerns reported at most polling units.

Prof. Yomere lauded the by-election, highlighting the improved turnout compared to previous reruns. He emphasized the absence of violence and technical glitches, attributing the success to the use of permanent election staff rather than ad hoc personnel. Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Grimah noted the overall smooth conduct of the rerun, except for a minor disturbance at a polling unit in Yala, promptly quelled by security forces.
