Drama Workshops Provide Vital Support for Displaced People in Sudan’s Blue Nile Region

In the wake of the conflict between the Sudan Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces, a ray of hope shines in the form of psychological support provided through drama workshops in the Blue Nile region. Mortada Yousef, head of the Blue Nile Dramatists Syndicate, underscored the urgent need for aid from local, regional, and international organizations to sustain their crucial work.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Dramatists Syndicate, offers workshops, drama, poetry, and music shows within shelter centers for the displaced. Local and displaced artists, musicians, and creative individuals fleeing to Ed Damazin are at the forefront of these efforts.

Moreover, children aged 7 to 14 actively engage in drama workshops, alongside other enriching activities such as music, drawing, and sports at the Youth Centre of El Roseires. These initiatives extend a warm invitation to families weekly, fostering camaraderie and community engagement.

The positive impact of these activities on the displaced population is profound, as articulated by Yousef. It beckons a sense of tranquility and a newfound sense of belonging within the society, enticing many to integrate and participate in the array of activities offered.

However, amidst these efforts, the dire situation persists. The plea for urgent relief remains unfulfilled, leaving vulnerable individuals, especially children and those with chronic illnesses, in precarious conditions. The International Organization for Migration reported a staggering 10.7 million displaced and refugees since the outbreak of the conflict in April, rendering Sudan the epicenter of the world’s largest internal displacement crisis, as stated by the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs.

The gravity of the situation underscores an immediate need for intervention from humanitarian organizations, the Ministry of Social Welfare, and the Humanitarian Aid Commission. Their collective action is pivotal in alleviating the suffering of those in dire straits and fostering a semblance of normalcy for the displaced population in the Blue Nile region.
