Group Calls for Dissolution of Kano Emirate, Reinstatement of Deposed Emir Sanusi

A pressure group, “Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano” (the Kano Electorate), has appealed to the Kano State House of Assembly for the dissolution of four additional emirates and the reinstatement of Mr. Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

The emirate law, which established the additional emirates in Gaya, Rano, Karaye, and Bichi, was signed by the then governor Abdullahi Ganduje on December 5, 2019, and subsequently dethroned the then Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, banishing him to Awe in Nasarawa State.

Following a legal challenge to his banishment, Mr. Sanusi left Awe for Lagos after a court declared the banishment unlawful. Speculations abound over plans to reinstate Mr. Sanusi and dissolve the additional emirates, believed to have been established to diminish his influence.

The group’s letter, dated February 5, 2024, and addressed to the speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, emphasizes that reinstating Mr. Sanusi and consolidating the emirates will promote unity, peace, and stability within Kano State and its neighboring communities.

The letter outlines the group’s belief in the potential for unity and progress through the consolidation of the emirates into a single entity and expresses the impact Mr. Sanusi had during his tenure as Emir. It highlights his commitment to social and economic development, education, healthcare, and improved living standards for the citizens of Kano State.

The group firmly believes that reinstating Mr. Sanusi will restore unity and harmony and contribute to the overall development and progress of not only Kano State but also Nigeria as a whole. It urges the esteemed members of the assembly to consider this matter in the interest of the progress and unity of Kano State.

The group expresses hope that their plea will be carefully considered and looks forward to positive outcomes arising from the crucial review.
