The Labour Party in Edo State has initiated the screening process for candidates ahead of the ward delegates congress, leading up to the governorship primary slated for February 23, 2024. The Edo gubernatorial election, scheduled for September 21, 2024, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has prompted this crucial preparation.

Kelly Ogbaloi, the State Chairman of the party, emphasized the significance of the screening, noting that its purpose is to ensure fairness in the selection of delegates for the party’s primary. With two delegates to be elected from each of the 192 wards in the state, the ward delegates congress is set for Sunday, February 18, while the local government delegates congress will follow on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

Ogbaloi clarified that the screening exercise is an essential step in the party’s internal politics, aiming to ascertain the competence and character of potential delegates. He highlighted the financial commitment required of participants, with those involved in the ward delegates congress expected to pay N500,000, and local government delegates N10,000.

Sam Uroupa, the State Publicity Secretary of the party, underscored the importance of the screening process in preventing the influence of political godfathers. He emphasized that the selection criteria aim to ensure that only committed and eligible individuals participate in the party delegate congresses.

Uroupa further outlined the criteria for membership, emphasizing the necessity of financial commitment, party dues payment, and active involvement in furthering the party’s interests. He assured the public that the primary election will be conducted in a manner that is free, fair, and credible, devoid of statutory or super delegates.

As the Edo State prepares for this critical political process, the screening exercise stands as a testament to the party’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring a transparent and inclusive electoral system.
