Hundreds of members from major political parties in Ondo State have defected to the Labour Party just weeks before the general election. The defectors include individuals from the All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party, and the Social Democratic Party, specifically from the Akoko South-East/Akoko South-West Federal Constituency. This significant event took place in Isua Akoko, the headquarters of the Akoko South-East Local Government Area, on Wednesday. During the gathering, the defectors expressed their support for the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.

One of the leaders among the defectors, Mr. Stephen Adeyeri, a former House of Representatives aspirant from the APC, highlighted that Obi’s impressive track record and comprehensive manifesto addressing various national challenges motivated him and his supporters to join the Labour Party. Adeyeri stated, “Obi is the candidate to beat because he has proven to be competent among other candidates. His records while he held sway in Anambra are in the public domain; he didn’t achieve all of that by subterfuge but by dint of hard work.” He emphasized his commitment to promoting Obi’s candidacy to his supporters, underscoring the importance of electing him, particularly for his plans to transition the country from a state of consumption to one of production.

Earlier in the event, the party’s state secretary, Mr. Agabje Abiodun, welcomed the defectors and encouraged them to campaign for the Labour Party throughout the state. He pointed out that the immediate past governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, had successfully governed the state on the Labour Party platform from 2009 to 2014, suggesting that the party should be supported based on its proven track record.
