In a bold declaration, Catholic Bishops in Nigeria have voiced their disagreement with Pope Francis’ position on the blessing of same-sex couples, denouncing it as an endorsement of same-sex marriage.
Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, in his address at the 2024 First Plenary Assembly of the CBCN, criticized the Pope’s stance, asserting that it could undermine the unity and catholicity of the Church.
He expressed disappointment with the Declaration, Fiducia Supplicans, issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, stating that while it prohibits liturgical blessings for same-sex couples, it recommends spontaneous pastoral blessings for couples in irregular situations, including same-sex couples.
Ugorji highlighted the ambiguous nature of the document, citing the varied reactions of acceptance, scepticism, and rejection from Episcopal Conferences and individual Bishops worldwide. He emphasized that the publication sparked shock, outrage, and disbelief among the faithful in Nigeria, Africa, and beyond.
The Bishops emphasized their commitment to upholding the teachings of the Church, rooted in Holy Scripture and Tradition. They underscored the Church’s stance that there is no possibility of blessing same-sex couples or unions in Africa, as homosexual acts are considered gravely depraved and contrary to natural law.
Amidst their unwavering stance, the Bishops reiterated the unconditional love of God for sinners, while emphasizing the call to repentance.
This resolute stand taken by the Nigerian Catholic Bishops sets the stage for a continuing dialogue on the intersection of traditional doctrine and contemporary societal norms.
