Nigeria Customs Service Vows to Combat Illegal Grain Smuggling

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to ramping up efforts to combat the illicit smuggling of Nigeria’s grains to other African nations, aiming to uphold domestic food security.

During a visit to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, Ify Ogbudu, the Zonal Coordinator of NCS Zone B, pledged the service’s assistance in ensuring that the 42,000 metric tons of grains sanctioned for distribution by the Federal Government effectively reach those in need as directed.

Ogbudu sought the emir’s support in acknowledging the vital role of Customs in accelerating the government’s initiatives for poverty alleviation and food security.

In response, the emir expressed gratitude for the Customs’ endeavors in preserving the country’s economic integrity amid significant challenges. He urged Customs officers to uphold diligence in their service to the nation and to display empathy towards local traders who may unknowingly violate regulations.

Furthermore, he emphasized the significance of education and community involvement in preventing breaches, assuring the emirate’s cooperation in facilitating legitimate trade. The emir also lauded the strides made in reducing conflicts between traders and customs officials through engagements with stakeholders. Additionally, he commended the ongoing awareness campaigns aimed at supporting local traders and entrepreneurs in conducting lawful trade.
