The Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, has resigned from his position after a court ruling on the separation of powers. Lukonde, 46, submitted his official resignation to President Félix Tshisekedi with his mandate as the National Deputy representing Kasenga Constituency validated.
Lukonde’s departure follows the Constitutional Court’s declaration of the incompatibility of government and legislative functions, directing ministers, provincial governors, and members of political cabinets elected in legislative elections to resign from their political positions or give up their electoral mandate.
Appointed in February 2021, Lukonde led the government after the collapse of the coalition between ex-President Joseph Kabila and Tshisekedi. The resignation raises questions about whether it was influenced by the court decision.
The Congolese army’s ongoing battle against the M23 rebels in Eastern DRC and Rwanda’s involvement in the conflict have drawn international attention. The United States and the European Union have urged for de-escalation while Rwanda has demanded the demobilization and repatriation of the DRC-backed Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebel group as a condition to ease tensions.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame emphasized that ending DRC’s support for FDLR is crucial for Rwanda’s territorial integrity and national unity, maintaining a strong military presence on the border with DRC. The heightened tension raises concerns about regional stability.
This event underlines the complex political and military dynamics in the region as concerns about the Congolese army, rebel groups, and neighboring countries create potential for larger conflict.
